What are veneers?
Dental veneers are a thin shell made of porcelain or ceramic that sits on top of the natural tooth. It essentially replaces the tooth's natural enamel and by doing so, we can change the appearance of the tooth.
What can dental veneers do for me?
We use veneers to accomplish a wide variety of goals including, whitening teeth, closing gaps between teeth, changing the shape of teeth and even making them appear straighter. When someone looks at pictures of celebrities with perfect smiles, he or she may not realize that most of those celebrities were not born looking that way. People of all backgrounds and professions use dental veneers to change the appearance of their teeth for a better smile.
We can place veneers on top of all of the visible teeth to create a smile that looks exactly like one wants it to. There are very few issues that a veneer cannot correct. Since veneers lay on top of natural teeth, no oral surgery is necessary for the transformation.
What is the process of placing dental veneers?
First, we will examine the patient's teeth and gums to determine if the patient has any signs of cavities or gum disease. If one does, we will address these things first to ensure the patient's mouth is healthy enough for treatment. We will not place a veneer on top of an infected tooth. Next, we will take an impression of the mouth and take measurements to determine what the exact shape and size of your veneers need to be. We will also use a shade card so the patient can determine how white he or she wants the veneers to be. This information will be sent to the lab so that they can be created.
During this time, we will prepare the patient's teeth. We do this by removing a portion of the enamel so that the veneers lay flat. Since the patient's teeth will be sensitive, we will use a temporary veneer to protect them while the permanent ones are being created. While wearing them, the patient will need to be careful with what he or she eats since the temporary veneers are not as sturdy as the permanent ones. Once the permanent set is ready, the patient will come back in for the temporaries to come off and the permanent veneers to be bonded in place. The result will be a stunning looking smile that is durable and absolutely gorgeous.
